The fourth, final, and most important pillar is spirit. It anchors body, mind, and soul together. Visualize them as three intersecting rings, with spirit occupying the center where they overlap. Unfortunately, it is also the most frequently disregarded and neglected of them all. Spirit is the realm of legacy and conscience. Wisdom, morality, and faith are its foundational blocks.
The primary need of the human spirit is legacy. All people struggle to find meaning and purpose in life. We dread the nihilistic view that there is no answer and we are simply here today and gone tomorrow, insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die.
Children are a meaningful part of legacy. They carry-on your name, memory, and influence to future generations after your death. Scripture warns that the iniquity of fathers pass to the 3rd and 4th generation, but mercy is granted to those who love Yahweh and keep his commandments. I covered this in my post, The Big 10, if you would like to read more.
Legacy IS your sacred purpose and spirit your connection to Yahweh, the creator. Actions and choices in this life have eternal consequences. There are no cosmic do-overs or second chances. It is appointed for man to die once and be judged according to the merit of his nature. Did you stubbornly and rebelliously remain fallen or did you humble yourself and accept salvation and redemption? Some will be blessed with everlasting life and others cursed to everlasting disgrace. Either way, your legacy is forever.
The main attribute of spirit is conscience; that still small voice that urges us to obey the moral law. We can ignore it, but as a result, our conscience becomes seared and we drift further and further away from the truth. As Christians, we are promised that the Holy Spirit will indwell us, teach us, and help us remember all that Jesus/Yeshua taught. It’s comforting to know that there is an internal source of help outside of your own will upon which to draw strength.
God is spirit, and those that worship him must do so in spirit and in truth. Yeshua is the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to Yahweh the father except through his sacrifice. Now, this is either true or it’s not. I cannot make that decision for you, but such is the nature of truth. It is very exclusive. But, if it seems evil for you to serve Yahweh, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, there are plenty of false gods from which to pick. As for me and my house, we will serve Yahweh.
Body is the physical, temporal part of man which interacts with physical reality. Mind is the thinking, mental aspect of man that controls our free will. Soul is the union of body and spirit and the seat of emotion. Spirit is the eternal part of man, breathed into us directly from Yahweh our creator. After death, at the resurrection, our spirit will inhabit a new, eternal body of glory that will never become sick, age, or die. Scripture informs us that the human eye has not seen, ear heard, nor mind conceived the glory that awaits those who love Yahweh.
Imagine a body of pure light, under full control of the spirit, no longer bound by time and probably space. I’ve always thought it would be something like The Vision in Avengers. A body whose physical properties could be consciously manipulated with the ability to fly, breathe under water, and change density. Who knows really? No matter how fantastic we dream, it will pale in comparison. I hope that you will ponder these truths, exercise your free will, and choose service to Yahweh in faith, through the grace provided by his son, Yeshua the Messiah.
